The traditional rule: seasons
Old-timers will tell you straw runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, felt the rest of the year. That rule was born in places with real winters — down here, most folks stretch straw season from March clear through October, because a Texas "fall" is just summer with football. The honest rule: wear straw when it's hot, felt when it's not. Nobody worth knowing will check your calendar.
What felt does best
Felt cowboy hats — wool, fur blend, or premium fur like beaver — hold their shape beautifully, shed rain, block wind, and keep your head warm. They're the dress boot of hats: right for dance halls, church, weddings, winter workdays, and any occasion where you want to look put together. The X-rating (4X, 8X, 20X) tells you roughly how much fur content is in the felt — more X's mean a finer, more weather-resistant, more expensive hat. A quality wool felt in the $50–$120 range is plenty of hat for most people; fur felt is a lifetime investment.

What straw does best
Straw hats breathe. That's the whole job, and in a Texas summer it's the most important job there is. Bangora and shantung straws are tightly woven and hold a sharp crease; palm leaf is the working cowboy's favorite because it shrugs off sweat and rain and costs less to replace when a bull steps on it. Straw X-ratings work like felt's: higher means tighter weave, finer straw, better hat.
